So what's a Kickstarter?

Here at Eva & Paul, we’re gearing up for a Kickstarter campaign on May 7th. As we move forward, many inquiring minds want to know - “What exactly IS Kickstarter?”  We decided to put together an introduction just for you.

What is Kickstarter?

Kickstarter is a website that raises support and funding for creative, innovative projects by connecting with a “crowd” of people. A Kickstarter project can only be successful thanks to the support and funding of this crowd.

How it Works

Companies or individuals create campaigns using visual content like videos and pictures that illustrate their idea & purpose for Kickstarter. They create a list of rewards for backers, set a fundraising goal and an ending date, and communicate with backers. Folks who fund a Kickstarter receive their rewards after the funding goal has been reached.  Many campaigns, like Eva & Paul, offer goods and services at a discount because of the risks and delay of product delivery. We’ll sell out jeans for $125-150 instead of $179-199.

As the campaign progresses, the campaigners can set up “Frequently Asked Questions” and “Risks and Challenges”. Since all Kickstarters involve selling things that don’t exist yet, these sections speak to the inherent risk in supporting a campaign.

What Happens Next?

Well, funding of course!  Once the campaign launches, and the video and content go live, it’s the campaigner’s job to spread the word. This involves lots of social media, PR, and a slew of events. A Kickstarter project that doesn’t reach its fundraising goal won’t be funded and the money that was raised is returned to the backers. At E&P, we’ll be spreading the word through trunkshow parties in Boston, NYC, San Francisco, and DC.
